Description

Disulfiram was the first medicine approved for the treatment of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is prescribed to help people who want to quit drinking by causing a negative reaction if the person drinks while they are taking antabuse.
Please note that it is a treatment and not a cure.

How to use

Take this medication by mouth, usually one or two tablets daily as directed by your doctor. Tablets can be crushed or mixed with liquid if swallowing is a problem. Do not take this medication for at least 12 hours after drinking alcohol. While taking this medication, it is extremely important you avoid alcohol in all forms including beer, wine, aftershave lotions, mouthwash, colognes, liquid medications.

Side Effects

If you drink while taking antabuse, you can experience these symptoms:
Flushing
Nausea
Copious Vomiting
Sweating
Thirst
Throbbing in the Head and Neck
Throbbing Headache
Respiratory Difficulty
Chest Pain
Palpitations
Dyspnea
Hyperventilation
Tachycardia
Hypotension
Syncope
Marked Uneasiness
Weakness
Vertigo
Blurred Vision
Confusion

Those are the "mild" symptoms. Severe reactions may include respiratory depression, cardiovascular collapse, myocardial infarction, acute congestive heart failure, unconsciousness, arrhythmias, convulsions, and death.
Drug Interaction

Disulfiram can affect the way your body reacts to other drugs. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially: amitriptyline, isoniazid, metronidazole, theophylline, phenytoin, warfarin.
Over Dose

If overdose is suspected call your local poison control centre or emergency services immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may include unsteadiness, unusual bleeding or bruising, facial flushing, decreased sexual ability, fainting, memory loss, garlic or rotten egg breath, metallic taste, and seizures.
Notes

Only someone who wants to try to quit drinking and who is fully aware of the consequences of drinking while on the medication should take Disulfiram. It should never be given to some without their full knowledge or to anyone who is intoxicated.
Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered if it is within 12 hours of the missed dose. If it is past 12 hours when you remember, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Uses

Disufiram is used to treat chronic alcohol abuse.
Storage

Store in a cool, dry place.
Precaution

Because of the possible severe reactions, this medication should not be given to anyone with a history of severe heart disease, psychosis, or an allergy to antabuse. Women who are pregnant should not take Disulfiram and no one taking paraldehyde or metronidazole should use Disulfiram.
