Mesalamine belongs to a class of medication known as Anti Inflammatory Agents.
It is used in ulcerative colitis to treat inflammation in the large intestine.
How to use
In order for this medication to be effective, the pills must be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.
Side Effects
Serious side effects of Mesalamine include fever, severe headache, and sudden or severe abdominal pain. Minor side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, headache which may resolve on their own.
Drug Interaction
Mesalamine is not known to interact with other medications. People who have had an adverse reaction to sulfasalazin may also be sensitive to Mesalamine.
Over Dose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose should be taken soon, just take that dose. Don't double up, or take more than one dose at a time.

Mesalamine is used in ulcerative colitis to treat inflammation in the large intestine.
It is the only sulfa-free medication indicated to both:
treat mild to moderate flare-ups of ulcerative colitis
maintain remission of ulcerative colitis
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F, away from heat and moisture.
