Description

Rasagiline belongs to the family of medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It is used to treat Parkinson's disease

How to use

It is important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor

Side Effects

Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects:
abdominal pain
abnormal skin sensation
accidental injury
constipation
diarrhea
difficulty moving or controlling movements
dizziness when standing from a sitting or lying position
dizziness
dry mouth
falls
feeling unwell
flu-like symptoms
hair loss
headache
heartburn
joint pain
lack of coordination
loss of appetite
nausea
neck pain
rash
sexual problems
sweating
trouble sleeping
vomiting
weakness
weight loss
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
abnormal heartbeat
black tarry stools, abdominal pain, blood in vomit
bruising
fever
hallucinations (hearing, seeing, or feeling things that aren't actually there)
signs of depression (loss of interest in activities, sleeping too much, difficulty sleeping, eating more or less than usual, difficulty concentrating)
Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:
chest pain
fainting
peeling, blistering skin
shortness of breath, wheezing, difficult breathing
signs of a severe allergic reaction such as hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat
Drug Interaction

There may be an interaction between rasagiline and any of the following:
ciprofloxacin
cyclobenzaprine
dextromethorphan
levodopa
MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine, selegiline)
meperidine
methadone
propoxyphene
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine)
serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors - SNRI antidepressants (e.g., venlafaxine)
St. Johns wort
sympathomimetic medications (e.g., pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, ephedrine)
theophylline
tramadol
tricyclyic and tetracylclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyine, doxepin, nortriptyline)
Over Dose

If you suspect an overdose call the emergency department or your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Uses

It is used to treat Parkinson's disease. Low dopamine levels in the brain are responsible for many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, so this medication works by rebalancing the levels of dopamine.
Storage

Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
Precaution

Rasagiline should not be used by anyone who:
is allergic to rasagiline or any of the ingredients of the medication
is taking any of the following medications
cyclobenzaprine
dextromethorphan
meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene
St. John's wort
antidepressants - at least 14 days must pass after stopping antidepressants (at least 5 weeks for fluoxetine) before starting rasagiline; anyone starting an antidepressant must wait at least 14 days after stopping rasagiline
MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine) - at least 14 days must pass after stopping rasagiline
sympathomimetics including amphetamines and cold medications; and weight-reducing products that contain pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, ephedrine
is undergoing elective surgery that requires a general anesthetic (unless rasagiline has been stopped for at least 14 days prior to the surgery)
has pheochromocytoma (a tumour of the adrenal gland)
