Description

Fluorouracil is indicated for the topical treatment of multiple actinic or solar keratoses of the face and anterior scalp.

Be AWARE that when you apply Fluorouracil to your skin, it causes inflammation and then sloughing, or shedding, of these abnormal cells. This irritation is common when you use this cream and is a sign that the treatment is working.

How to use

Apply Fluorouracil only to the areas your doctor has recommended. It can be applied once a day for up to 4 weeks. This cream is for external use only, and you should avoid contact with your eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Do not taste or swallow it. You should only apply Fluorouracil as prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects

Most patients using Fluoruoracil experience skin reactions where the medicine is used, including redness, dryness, burning, pain, erosion (loss of the upper layer of skin), and swelling. Irritation generally begins around day 4 of treatment and may continue for 2 or more weeks after treatment is completed.

Some patients get eye irritation that might consist of burning, sensitivity, itching, stinging, and watering. If you are concerned about side effects, talk to your doctor.

Drug Interaction

There are no reported food or drug interactions.
Over Dose

Although no specific information is available on Fluorouracil overdosage, any medication used in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdosage, seek medical attention immediately.

Notes

Avoid exposure to sunlight or other ultraviolet light (such as tanning booths) as much as possible during treatment, since it could worsen the side effects you may experience during treatment. When exposed to sunlight, wear a hat and use sunscreen to minimize exposure to ultraviolet light (always wait 2 hours after treatment before applying sunscreen).
Do not cover the treated skin with a dressing.
Do not breast-feed or become pregnant while using Fluorouracin. If you do become pregnant, stop using the cream immediately and talk to your doctor right away.
Missed Dose

Apply a missed dose as soon as you remember. If more than a few hours have passed, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. If you miss more than 1 dose, contact your doctor.
Uses

This cream is used by adults to treat skin conditions on the face and front part of the scalp called solar keratosis or actinic keratosis.
Storage

Store away from heat, light, and moisture.
Precaution

Fluorouracin should not be used by women who are pregnant, considering becoming pregnant, or nursing.
It should not be used by people with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme deficiency. If you have DPD enzyme deficiency and use this cream, you may develop serious side effects, such as stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or chills.
Do not use this product if you are allergic to fluorouracil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the inactive ingredients.
It should not be used by patients under 18 years of age.
