Sitagliptin belongs to the group of diabetes medications called DPP-4 inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of incretin released by the intestine.

It is important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Common side effects include:
constipation
cough
diarrhea
fatigue
nausea or vomiting
sore throat
stuffy or runny nose
Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
anxiety
back pain
chest pain
dizziness or vertigo (sensation that the room is spinning)
joint pain
stomach pain
symptoms of a urinary tract infection (e.g., pain or burning when urinating, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy-looking or foul-smelling urine)
symptoms of depression (e.g., loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy, feeling sad, changes in eating or sleeping patterns, feelings of guilt or hopelessness)
Stop taking the medication immediately if you experience the following:
symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; skin rash; hives; or difficulty breathing)

Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services.

Sitagliptin should not be used by anyone who is allergic to sitagliptin or to any of the ingredients of the medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Sitagliptin is used, in combination with metformin, to improve blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. This medication should be used as part of an overall diabetes management plan that includes a diet and exercise program.

Store this medication at room temperature, and keep it out of the reach of children.

This medication is not recommended for people with congestive heart failure (CHF). If you have CHF, speak to your doctor.

This medication is not recommended for people with moderately to severely reduced kidney function.

This medication is not recommended for people with severely reduced liver function.

Sitagliptin should not be used in people with type 1 diabetes or to treat diabetic ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood or urine).

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
