Description

Ketoconazole belongs to the family of medications called antifungals.

How to use

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. Please use according to your doctor's instructions.


Side Effects

Less common side effects include:
constipation
diarrhea
dizziness
drowsiness
headache
nausea
vomiting
Consult your doctor immediately if you experience the following rare side effects:
fever and chills
skin rash and itching
dark or amber urine
fever and sore throat
loss of appetite
pale stools
reddening, blistering, peeling, or loosening of skin and mucous membranes
stomach pain
unusual bleeding or bruising
unusual tiredness or weakness
yellow eyes or skin

Drug Interaction

Ketocanazole may interact adversely with the following medications. Please inform your doctor of ALL medications you are presently using.
antacids
carbamazepine
didanosine
H2-receptor antagonists (e.g, cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, ranitidine)
isoniazid
phenytoin
phenobarbital
proton pump inhibitors (e.g., omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole)
rifabutin
rifampin
ritonavir
sucralfate
Medications other than those listed above may interact with this medication. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.


Over Dose

If you suspect an overdose, please call Emergency Services or Poison Control immediately
Notes

Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had :

Achlorhydria/Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid production)
Alcohol abuse problem
Other chronic illness
Liver disease
Avoid alcohol and alcohol containing beverages.
Missed Dose

It is very important that this medication be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of scheduled medication use it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double-up on doses.

Uses

It is used for the treatment of certain types of serious fungal infections. Ketoconazole is used to treat both internal (in the body) and external (on the skin) fungal infections.
Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 - 30 degrees C (59 - 86 degrees F) away from heat and moisture.
Precaution

This medication should not be used by:
anyone allergic to ketoconazole or to any of the ingredients of the medication
women who may become pregnant, unless effective forms of birth control are used
anyone with reduced liver function
anyone taking astemizole or quinidine.
