Description

Itraconazole is a drug used in the treatment of fungal infections, such as aspergillosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and fungal infection localized to the toenails and fingernails (onychomycosis).

How to use

This mediaction should be taken with a full meal. Use according to your doctor's advice.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of itraconazole are minor and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, edema, fatigue, dizziness. Less common but more serious side effects are liver enzyme elevation, hepatitis, and high blood pressure (hypertension).
Drug Interaction

Itraconazole should not be taken at the same time as:
cisapride
erythromycin
midazolam (taken by mouth)
triazolam
terfenadine
astemizole
pimozide
quinidine
atorvastatin
pravastatin
simvastatin
lovastatin
Itraconazole should not be taken by anyone with known allergy to the medication or its ingredients. Caution should be used by those taking itraconazole who are allergic to other "azoles" such as ketoconazole.

Over Dose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services.
Notes

Do not treat yourself with OTC medication whilst on a course with this medication, without consulting with your health care professional.
Consult your health care professional about having grapefruit whilst on a course with this medicine, in any form.
Missed Dose

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses.
Uses

Itraconazole is treatment of fungal infections which are isolated to a small area of the body (localized) or throughout the body (systemic). It is active against fungal infections such as aspergillosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and fungal infection localized to the toenails and fingernails (onychomycosis).
Storage

Itraconazole should be stored at room temperature in a tight container. Protect from light and moisture.
Precaution

Itraconazole capsules should not be taken to treat fungal nail or skin infections by anyone who has, or has a history of, heart failure (including congestive heart failure).
People with liver or kidney problems should be cautious about using this medication.
If you conceive whilst on a course with this medication inform your doctor immediately.
If you need to undergo any kind of surgery, inform your doctor you are taking this medicine.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive.
